Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her, her identity, her spirit, her will to live, pay. Josh Bennett's story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space. Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won't go away until she's insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she's been hiding, or if he even wants to.

Beautiful. Tragic. Funny. Realistic. This one knocked me over. Great if you're in the mood for a bit of misunderstandings and sadness in your love stories.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. But I know one thing for certain. It is so, incredibly, overhyped.

In the beginning, I thought it was brilliant. The writing was different, so different from what is in most YA books these days.
Then as the book progressed, I kind of got tired of the whole thing. Everything was written so literally, and it was as if every feeling, EVERY. SINGLE. FEELING. was printed onto those pages. Now, maybe others love that about it, but for me, it was all too much.
And as I neared the end of the story, certain events happened, and all I could think was "Really?" "Is this really happening?" It was that ridiculous. But of course, I had to finish the book, I had to find out what the ending was, so of course, I have to give it props for that.

And that is why I gave it a 3 star rating. Not horrible, but not blow-your-mind staus either.

Unlikeable characters. Too much existential angst. Boring.

The Sea of Tranquility is an intense read with complicated characters. Each character, main and supporting, is interesting and complex. Both main characters have endured incredible pain and are trying to figure out how to live in a world that they don't entirely want to be in. Unusual bonds form between unlikely characters, who make mistakes while trying to sort out the confusion of their lives. The story holds many surprises which create emotional turmoil for all of the characters. The best part of The Sea of Tranquility is that there isn't any "insta-love". All relationships that are formed don't come immediately and certainly don't come easily. They are satisfying because of what the characters has to go through in order to keep the relationships together.

Don't think you can read this book in leisurely installments, a chapter here and a chapter there. It is completely engrossing from the first page to the last. The novel is about Nastya, a high school senior who resorts to selective mutism to deal with a traumatic event. She meets Josh who has had traumas of his own, and they develop a friendship and one of the best slow-burn romances I have ever read. Healing comes incrementally, without cliches and stereotypes. It's a beautiful book; you read it and forget you're reading. Highly recommended.

Josh and Nastya are lost. Nastya is trying to make it through high school without everyone nosing into her secrets. Josh is trying to survive the fact that his secrets are out in the open for the world to see. When Nastya transfers schools to live with her sister, she tromps all over the bubble that seemed to surround Josh, creating a fragile friendship that neither character seems to be able to understand. The two dance in, out, and around one another's lives creating a lyrical but intense read.
