'The Bargaining' is an interesting read. The main character, Penny, has gone through trauma, which sets a nice backdrop for a horrific story. The premise of the book, moving to a house hidden in a haunting wood to renovate it, is a good setup, and the added tension of her not wanting to be there, along with having to be there alone with a stepmother she knows almost nothing about but is determined to hate adds a layer of relatability for those whose parents have remarried.

The characters are interesting, and the story compelling. The motivations of some of the characters could be fleshed out a bit more, and some explanation could have been added to elaborate certain points, but whether that sort of information was left out intentionally to create an air of mystery and intrigue is up for debate.

The ending was a little disappointing to me, and it felt incomplete and a bit dissatisfying. There is certainly a desire to know more about the last development that occurs, but as this is a standalone novel, there is no way to know what happens next.

Overall, this book is creepy and fun to read, and it is the kind of book to curl up with on a stormy day. I would recommend it to those who want a fright, but who still want to be able to sleep at night without the lights on.
