It's 1944 and the Japanese are losing the war, but Shanghai is more dangerous than ever, particularly for the Adler family. After fleeing Nazi Europe, Dr. Franz Adler and his teenage daughter, Hannah, have adjusted to life in their strange adopted city, but they are now imprisoned in the Shanghai Ghetto for refugee Jews. Franz is compelled to work as a surgeon for the hated Japanese military, while struggling to keep the city's woefully under-supplied refugee hospital functioning. Canadian author - Vancouver

The third of a trilogy a as gripping as the others. I did not know a lot about the Jewish community in China during the second World War and I learned something from reading this novel. Also good characters and compelling story. Didn't want to put the books down.

This book was as enjoyable as the first two. The author did a fantastic job reminding the reader of who the characters are and their back story.
