I expected that the movie would be good once I saw the names of three excellent actors (Chastain, Farrell and Morton), and that the film was written and directed by Liv Ullman. It was extremely tedious, too much talking, not enough action. Reminded me a bit of those slow and depressing Swedish movies that Liv Ullman acted in during the 1970s. Maybe that is where she got the idea on how to direct the film. Not even Colin Farrell could save this movie. I fast forwarded through a lot of it, hoping that something of interest would happen and that the plot would quicken and get interesting. Then I scrolled back, afraid that maybe I had missed something interesting, but I hadn't. A movie showing Colin Farrell's excellent acting ability is "In Bruges". Would recommend that one.

In our Twitter age this Liv Ullman adaptation, clocking in at over two hours, of the Strindberg classic is a fish out of water. If you like words and are interested in class and sexuality this movie might hold your attention. It is difficult and uncomfortable material to wade through. Be prepared to be upset. Interestingly the film cost over $5 million and earned a little over $1 million, mostly in international box office sales.

Extremely slow movie. Wanted to turn it off many times but keep watching hoping it would get better. Nope never did.

Though the acting was good. They both can play crazy well.

Yikes. This is pretty twisty and intense. I can't honestly say that I enjoyed it.

I was not familiar with Strindberg's play, and was bewildered by the first scenes of this movie version directed by Liv Ullmann. The power balance between a young lady and her servants takes a while to become clear. But I recommend staying with it until the second half/act, when the scales tip and the performances are very compelling. It's visually beautiful, with warm reds and blues.

The film reminds the audience that much of the late 19th century social chaos on class is still alive today, as the OWS movement, based on the classic Strindberg play, serious theater and not some "Three's Company" erotic comedy.

Fans of Chastain or of Farrell (looking the worse for wear) may want to add this to their lists, but it will be tough going for others....

At 2' 10" running time, it's just too long -- and too s l o w: too many lengthy exchanges, d r a g g ed out with l o n g pauses.

In the end, though the head is impressed, the heart remains unmoved.
