An inspirational account of the creation of a pathbreaking inner-city middle school by a magnetic young principal who rocketed to national fame via Humans of New York. Nadia Lopez found herself in the national spotlight and headed for a meeting with Obama. Here is her first-person account of what it took to get to that moment. Everything was an uphill battle - to get the school launched, to recruit faculty and students, to solve a million new problems every day, from violent crime to vanishing supplies, but Lopez illustrates how leadership often means just picking the right people to support you.

I would have enjoyed this book more if it was written by another author. While Lopez's voice resonates throughout, it reads more like a collection of memories that she was reflecting on. But her message is still valuable - these kids deserve better than what they've been given. And I love that her school works to provide that.
