Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd arrives on assignment in Brokenwood, a small town where memories--and animosities--run deep. He's an experienced cop with a 1971 "classic" car, a collection of country music cassettes, and an indeterminate number of ex-wives. The new woman in his life is his assistant, Detective Constable Kristin Sims a by-the-book investigator nearly twenty years younger than her boss's car, who quickly has to get used to his lone-wolf ways.

Brokenwood is a quirky, fun New Zealand murder mystery series. The scenery is beautiful, the plots are intricate, and the soundtrack of New Zealand country and alt rock music is really great. If you like British murder mysteries, this is a perfect next step. - Jan G., Penn Lake Library

I had just discovered this series couple weeks ago by picking up series 2. I enjoyed it so I had to start at the beginning to see how the characters developed . Some commentor compared it to Midsummer murders New Zealand style. It doesn't quite measure up to that quality, but it is a very good series and I will watch more of them - in spite of the country music which I am not a fan of.

It's so nice to see some normal looking people, not some hunk or a stunning beauty making a totally unrealistic show. That is not to take away from the actors themselves, who are both attractive in their own way.

The show got better as the series progressed. I enjoyed watching the extra material (interview with the two leads and the writer talking about the show).

Beautiful scenery of New Zealand is the backdrop for this well-acted, well-directed detective series. Very good acting and good scripts--a bit like an Agatha Christie story with a touch of Colombo. Set in about 2015, a big-city detective goes to a small town and doesn't want to leave. Fabulous choices for the "background music" that leaves me wanting to explore the New Zealand country music genre.

It is a pretty good series. The actors do a good job and the stories are ok. The characters do grow on you.

The plots are trite; the acting second rate. A disappointment.

Difficult accent to become accustomed to hearing. Entertaining series to watch. The music is annoying, twangy country western.
