“At what point are you going to be satisfied?”
“I can’t stop until I feel like it’s over.”
“When is it over?”
“I’ll know when it’s over.” –Bill Genovese

The murder of Kitty Genovese made her the symbol of bystander apathy in America. Stabbed to death in 1964, it was reported in the New York Times that the attack was allegedly witnessed by 38 of her neighbors—who did nothing. Then, in 2004, this account was questioned, and the investigation reopened. Were the circumstances surrounding Kitty’s death a mere urban myth? In this riveting documentary, her brother Bill Genovese breaks the family’s silence, sharing his personal quest to find out the answers and ultimately humanizing Kitty for a new generation. His obsession with her death and the way it subsequently shaped his life is no less fascinating than the mystery surrounding the 38 and viewers will find themselves unable to look away as Genovese confronts the witnesses, their families, the killer, and ultimately himself.

This was a very interesting film about a brother's inability to move on since the brutal murder of his sister, 54 years ago!! Come on, I know it is hard, but he can't seem to move on - after 54 years. Losing both of his legs in Vietnam seemed to pale in comparison to his sister's death. I hope that by doing this piece that he can finally move on and accept her death.

The Kitty Genovese 1964 murder in NYC is infamous because of the report that 38 witnesses did nothing to help her. In this documentary, Kitty's younger brother begins a journey to find out the truth-- what was real and what became myth? Absolutely fascinating--if you are a documentary enthusiast and/or interested in the boundaries between fact, fiction and popular memory, this film should be on your "must see" list.
