The SLPL blog had an article on Julius Lester, and I've determined to read everything available. The first three books that came in were two illustrated children's books (one on John Henry of legend, and The Hungry Ghosts). To Be A Slave I actually read 40 years ago, in middle school, for part of a report. I just didn't remember it until I started reading. 40 years ago I knew only about Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, Roots had just come out on television. It was a much different experience as an adult. I recommend it to people of all ages. It is so refined, and so well edited. Lester is an amazing writer. He tells the story of hundreds of years and millions of voices through carefully chosen excerpts from his research. A number of books in the bibliography I've also put on my list. I'd give this book more than five stars. Ten stars on a scale of 1 to 5.

To Be A Slave by Julius Lester is a short book using the words of slaves and former slaves to describe the life of human bondage.

The portrayal of slavery in To Be A Slave is accurate and may illuminate. Some of the extracts from Twelve years a Slave made me want to read the slave narrative by Solomon Northup, and that book turned out to be fantastic.
