Bewitched by the haunting violin she hears in the subway, MIT mathematician Leela-May Moore falls in love at first listen with mysterious musician Mishka Bartok. A series of terrorist bombings which overlap disappearances by Mishka cause Leela to tail her lover, only to be snatched off the street and interrogated by members of a shadowy private security force. Their leader is Cobb Slaughter, who has loved/loathed her since their blighted childhoods in South Carolina. Is Cobb simply tormenting Leela, or could Mishka really be a terrorist?

I find this story remains with me long afterward. It is magically beautiful. Hospital remains an under-rated author, but she is one of my favourites.

I was looking forward to reading this book for a long time, and I am so glad I finally read it. It is intelligent prose about interesting, quirky, damaged people who have great difficulty moving around in the world.
