A long time ago I read "Cider with Rosie" & thoroughly enjoyed not just the story but the writing as well. This book intrigued me as it is about Laurie's year long wanderings in Spain in the early thirties before the Spanish War. A beautifully written tale of freedom, people, very keen observations and a way of life which was changed forever with the looming second world war- though there was the Civil war to get through first. After being evacuated back to England Laurie realised he had made a mistake and proceeded to sneak back into Spain via France. His part in the war is another story I believe. Well worth reading just for the prose alone. Fascinating absorbing tales.
