Based on a true story, this movie shows the true grit of the US soldiers. Great acting, and the wives of the soldiers are shown dealing with the loneliness of absent husbands and the pain and grief of loss if they died.

Yeah, the 1st Air Cavalry battle depicted in this movie actually happened more-or-less as portrayed. Unfortunately it is a piece of the mythology of the Vietnam War that grows more every day. I encourages we veterans to lie through our teeth even to one another about what we were, why we were, what we actually did back in those times. I go to the VA Hospital and sit in waiting rooms with dozens of other vets who lie to one another everyone claiming to be a combat vet. Every finance clerk every tanker, every helicopter mechanic has become a point man or sniper. I know a guy who was a battalion logistics officer with the Air Cav who's claiming today he was an infantry platoon commander. That war did a lot to all of us in this country, military and non military, but first and most it made liars of us all. A war we never should have fought, where every death was a waste. We lost, and nothing bad happened as a consequence. So we lie to ourselves and one another.

But only one out of every 20 of those guys wearing Vietnam Veteran caps ever even heard a shot fired in anger. One out of 100 were near enough to be in any danger. Force us to tell the truth for once.

One of the very few "Vietnam war" movies to come out of Hollywood that did not go overboard. Captured combat and the home life of soldiers families. Very well done, Oscar material.

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. “Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box”.

A simply outstanding film- Mel Gibson is brilliant as usual, and the fact that this is a historical film, based quite closely on Hal Moore's account of the battle, and that the North Vietnamese aren't portrayed as evil villians, but are simply soldiers, makes this one of the better war movies ever made. I highly recommend it.

One of the best war movies ever. Although the napalm scene always gets to you...

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.
