'Mary Reilly' is a brilliant examination of a woman who feels sympathy for one side of a man's nature and horror of the other as she seeks to find her redemption in both. However, you must have read Robert Louis Stevenson's fantastic story 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' to be able to appreciate this story. Probably, 'Mary Reilly' is to 'Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' what 'Wide Sargasso Sea' is to 'Jane Eyre'.

Looking at the cast and director, one would expect a good film, but this film falters. It may be that the gothic Victorian story, even with later overlaying of multiple personalities theories, is simply not credible. Or, it may have been a problem of miscasting.

My five stars is mostly based on the fact that the chemistry between Mary and Jekyll/Hyde is awesome. But I guess if I were to look at it overall, the story doesn't do much (but then again, neither does the book). I thought that overall everything was really good and memorable (the setting and script is awesome). It's mostly romance/lust driven and a bit gothic (dark and moody). If you like that kind of thing, it's worth a watch. One of my favorite films.
