"The Trial of Old Drum" was produced in Full Frame format (4:3 aspect ratio) for Animal Planet, a cable TV channel, and debuted 6/9/2000 on Animal Planet. The Whatcom County Library System has three DVDs of this feature. Two of the DVDs are the original 10/1/2002 DVD release by Lions Gate Film with a 1:28:31 movie run time, with English, French, and Spanish audio tracks, with English and Spanish subtitles, with a making-of featurette, with a director's commentary audio track, with deleted scenes, and with the original trailer. One of the WCLS DVDs is an edited 2003 DVD released by Feature Films for Families with a 1:24:20 movie run time, with English audio, without subtitles, with a parents guide, with movie trailers of FFfF releases, and with descriptions of other FFfF products.
Feature Films for Families obtains rights to edit and distribute movies to make them more suitable for younger children and to reduce the possibility that watching the movie might prompt younger children to ask awkward questions. In the case of "The Trial of Old Drum", over four minutes of footage was deleted, some of the resulting scenes were restructured, and some additional audio was deleted, including about 90% of the extensive original narration.
