"Who will inherit the riches of wealthy old Martin Chuzzlewit? The only person he trusts is his companion and nurse, the young orphan Mary Graham, but she is employed on the understanding that she will not inherit a penny. He has disinherited his grandson, Young Martin, suspicious of the motives of the young man's love for Mary. With such a fortune at stake, the rest of the family closes in like sharks. The obsequious Pecksniff, with his daughters Mercy and Charity, attempts to grovel into the old man's good graces, while the wicked Jonas will stop at nothing ... not even murder."--Container.

borrowed but did not watch

I loved this Dickens mini series. The sisters and their father are very entertaining as the story progresses. The father reminds me of Uriah Heep of David Copperfield. One of my favorite Dickens stories, and very well done. Tom Wilkerson does a great job as always.

Actually my wife watched this, and was quite entertained...she's the one game for viewing BBC films. In her words...watched this 6 part series all in one day--taking breaks of course and anxious to get back to it. Although it was from a 1994 broadcast, later put to DVD format, it was very well performed by several of my favorite British actors we would all come to know better in later years as well. John Mills was excellent in this--one of his last!
Another good Charles Dickens novel adapted to screen! Loved it!

An excellent adaptation of the book with strong performances throughout. I particularly enjoyed Peter Postlethwaite.

Agree with slow start. Hang in there - can't lose with good story and historical British locations. Classic Dickens' redemption, social commentary on English social classes, twists & turns and full engaging characters.
Enjoyed it! Would watch again.

Slow in the beginning but recommended. Typical Dickens style.

We enjoyed this very much although I must say it is extremely slow moving until the last hour or so. Tom Wilkinson is a stand out and you might recognize a very young Julia Sawalha (Dorcas Lane from Lark Rise to Candleford) as Mercy Peksniff. A good watch if you enjoy historical drama.
