This is a good Eastwood movie- he plays an Arizona deputy sheriff in New York City- so it plays up the ' fish out of water ' aspect. The film rambles a little bit in places but it's a pretty good interim film between the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns and the Dirty Harry movies.

Clint Eastwood had made a bunch of westerns by this point, but this was a sort of proto-Dirty Harry role for him. He plays an Arizona deputy sheriff who travels to NYC to extradite a prisoner, who then breaks loose. Eastwood is his usual laconic self, although he's more of a player than he usually is, and much of the humor comes from how out of place he is in the big city, especially among the hippies. It's a little dated, but it's tough and sardonic and was the first of many lone wolf cop movies that would be popular in the 70s ("French Connection," "Serpico," "Shaft"). This was the first of five movies Eastwood would do with director Don Siegel. Score by Lalo Schifrin, who wrote the "Mission Impossible" theme. Also see "Dirty Harry," "Escape from Alcatraz," "Two Mules for Sister Sara," and "The Beguiled."
