I would put it in one of the top 100 films I have seen in my life.

When I first saw this film in the theater, I was disappointed. However, last summer, I fell in love with Anne Tyler's writing style and read the book. I was amazed at how closely the movie followed the book. The only real flaw was that I felt as though I was reading the book in fast-foreword. The performances are all great, and I particularly loved the Corgi!

Hilarious, subtle comedy. William Hurt plays his part sooo low key in contrast to Geena Davis being so out there with her behaviour and emotions. Opposites do attract! What a crazy family, just like everyone's family in one way or another...

A touching heartfelt movie with believable characters.
I've read the book so many times
and will always be a favourite.

For some reason, this movie is one of my favorites. It is not overdone. I too thought all the leads excellent, and to my mind those supporting actors whose parts were substantial enough, were also excellent, the sister and the wonderful suitor especially. The directing and editing are not obtrusive and some of the touches charmed me no end. William Hurt is marvelous as the stodgy man in his different moments of coming a little bit alive.

Excellent movie… these are three great performances by the leading actors and several other very good interpretations by the supporting cast.

You give something up thinking it is not worth keeping and when you see another person pick that which was cast away, mend it and do something worthwhile with it then you want it back.

This type of plot and its subplots require subtle and quiet acting and a sense of time… you can’t hurry a story like this one. It demands to be told in detail.
