Kate Morton's books are complex and always keep your attention with her surprise twists and turns. The story alternates between 1941 and 2011 as Laurel Nicholson, an acclaimed actress, tries to uncover her mother's secret past. The story opens in 1961 when 16-year-old Laurel sees a stranger approaching her mother from the family treehouse. Before Laurel can climb down, the stranger is dead and her mother is holding a bloody knife. Good narration and a fascinating read make this a great summer read at the beach, in the mountains, or next to a lake.
