small town + murder + baker/amateur detective + cookie recipes = a too cutesy set up! Full of cliches, it was very difficult to buy the premise of this story (and, I guess, the rest of the series). Hannah is single, 30 yr old, moved back home, with a cat, iffy relationship with younger prettier sister, obsessive mother, looking for love ... etc. It takes a while to set up the first murder, which is supposed to establish the atmosphere, relationships, and routine. Hannah seems to have a more understanding relationship with her brother-in-law, who actually is a member of the local police and investigating the murder, than with her sister and mother. He allows her to join the murder investigation; she ends up taking it over. No one seems to question her authority to usurp a murder investigation, there is no concern about contaminating a crime scene or the importance of the chain of evidence. There is an opportunity for some humor with her mother and her constant search for a beau for her eldest daughter, but that seems to be a missed opportunity. I was expecting something in the style of Meg Cabot or Nancy Martin who both have series with touches of humor and a light style. This story was trying too hard to be cute!
