Excellent example of a movie adaptation that differs significantly from the source, yet provides its own luminous pleasures. Hugh Grant was born to play the role of callow Will, the novelty song trust fund beneficiary who devotes his life to doing and feeling... nothing. Nicholas Hoult gives excellent support as a socially inept 12 year old determined to puncture Will's cocooned existence. The film jettisons the novel's subsidiary characters and plot lines, focusing on this central relationship, and manufactures a more cinematic ending. While the novel is a richer experience, the interplay between Grant and Hoult is both comic and emotionally satisfying.
