With Rupert Friend as my love interest, I'd be far less dispassionate than Michelle Pfeiffer appears (at least until the end) in this Belle Epoque soap opera about an arranged marriage resulting in a love triangle (Charles & Diana style with genders reversed). But the tepid acting is just as well, since it gives you more time to stare at the utterly ravishing period fashions, hair, (modern) make-up, & Art Nouveau interiors. So even though most of the actors seem uncomfortable in period dress & furnishings (especially Pfeiffer & Kathy Bates), this film's superb visuals & refreshing innovations on the colours turquoise & purple are the reasons I gave it 4 stars.
