intro to the Parker character, hard boiled you bet but this one isn't a private eye. A fantasy felon is sort of a good idea, let's see how the other side works. This book was made into 3 movies so it caught Hollywoods fancy. Parker has a fascination for the author as well as he keeps coming back to him over 30 years.intro to the Parker character, hard boiled you bet but this one isn't a private eye. A bit of everything, very original plague to aftermath to how the society reacts. One of the most original scifi writers ever and a very easy readable style. Empathy for the characters is odd since most are avatars and the actual person is never seen. Currently my favorite writer.

Dark and a bit unpleasant to think of any belief that is so all consuming. Playthings of the Gods indeed! What fools these mortals be and to what end? Maybe HAL the computer knows or perhaps the monolith. Scalzi is a great Sci-fi writer.

A good writer weaving a tale from several viewpoints. The ladies of the retreat eventually emerge as a rather unlikeable group . This type of Outward Bound corporate training often will bring out the worst in individuals especially purely urban folk. Rather than bonding together out in the wild they seem to go sort of feral and that is the result here, nastiness to the fore.A good writer weaving a tale from several viewpoints. Mayhem is the main feature so it is a fast easy read. Child is starting to run out of good plots so he is borrowing from others in the field for plot lines. Time for Reacher to go away and for the author to try something new, he actually can write a decent novel if he puts his mind too it, the early books were much more interesting.Mayhem is the main feature so it is a fast easy read. Excellent history of the ladies in flying, I do wish the prose was not so dry and stilted. These were cutting edge ladies fighting against society and the cast iron ceiling of male aviators. I am a male aviator and instructed in military and civil aviation and the prejudice is still there, the ladies have to be tough as nails even today.Excellent history of the ladies in flying, I do wish the prose was not so dry and stilted. Pretentious techie babble pretending to be a novel. I can see why it took five years to finish, there must have been tons of reject slips and several editors.

If this had been the first Reacher novel there would not have been a second. I am ashamed I gutted it out to the end hoping for some saving grace like a really good end to this mess. Nope, not there. 300 pages of banal dialogue looking into peoples minds and where is the editor, asleep I guess. Even the sentence structure has gone away and now we are into terse, often meaningless phrases, this from a native born Englishman-terrible-terrible-terrible. My last time for this author. Got that. No More! Post on Twitter with the rest of the idiots! If this had been the first Reacher novel there would not have been a second. Sadly this is the last of the Old Man series and I felt the best because it made the entire conflict more understandable and the characters were once again human rather than machine-at least partly so. It shows that a sentient race will always carry the bad characteristics with it as it expands, to be human/alien is to kill perceived enemies and expansion into space will only increase the numbers of potential enemies.Sadly this is the last of the Old Man series and I felt the best because it made the entire conflict more understandable and the characters were once again human rather than machine-at least partly so. A dark tale of the evil in man-caused or inherent. Provides a good look at the problems of a very socialized society and the horrid bureaucratic mess that society has created. Along the lines of Wallander and the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo we now have another look at the modern Vikings and the dark side of their societies. The author has the knack to draw you into the narrative, I wanted to scream at people to hurry, to do something and gave thanks for the foreigner in the mix, the only logical person in the narrative-Allah be praised.A dark tale of the evil in man-caused or inherent. Representative of the older style crime drama, not quite noir but close. Good bad guy and a fairly complex plot line make for enjoyable and quick read. Ending was incomplete and abrupt like the book ended where the next book will pick up.

More Spillane than Bosch, Elvis Cole sometimes tries too hard to jest when he should be dodging and shooting. Overall enjoyable for the easy flow and endless odd characters he works for and against.

Surprisingly the action part of the narrative gets rather off the rails, the human side is very well done. Bosch is more of a thinker and the inclusion of Haller makes the legal side much more palatable. You would think LAPD and the DA would learn to leave him alone but that conflict is rather central to the series.Surprisingly the action part of the narrative gets rather off the rails, the human side is very well done. Good second book in the series. Weak science but good plot and writing, makes clones rather lovable even if their job is killing and being killed. The evil all powerful government is always good grist for the writers.

The detail of life in a repressive and unbalanced society overrides the plot. Life in China is a Death of a Thousand cuts where survival is dictated for the citizen by corrupt and venal leaders. Having visited China I have to say that for a westerner it has to be experienced and the experience will not be pleasant. Shanghai as a city is to be avoided; polluted, grossly overcrowded and artificial to the extreme. The detail of life in a repressive and unbalanced society overrides the plot. The book can be draggy, perhaps a bit too much detail of the generational struggles of cloned beings but a very interesting premiss and does look at the major problem of any sort of space travel-TIME. We will soon be trying to send people to Mars-just a hop skip and a jump down the road and time is a real enemy for a manned mission-that and the other problem-assistance is not possible should something go amiss. Space travel will be pretty much a one way mission until we actually get something close to the speed of light for travel. The book can be draggy, perhaps a bit too much detail of the generational struggles of cloned beings but a very interesting premiss and does look at the major problem of any sort of space travel-TIME. One of the best Sci-fi books ever written. Yes there is casual sex and killing and other unpleasant things caused by war and killing and such. Always has been and always will be as wars are nasty things especially when fought for "reasons unknown". About as anti-war as a book can be while graphically telling the tale of war.
